To meet the growing demand for reliable storage and processing capacity in Senegal, Hanse AgroStore partnered with Silas Export Senegal to build an expansive storage and processing hub under the name Agro Expedition Senegal. Originally intended as a storage facility with office space, the project evolved into a comprehensive multi-purpose agricultural center.
The first construction phase included a facility with two chambers, offering a combined storage capacity of 1,100 tons for potatoes and onions, plus an office space. Encouraged by its success, the client commissioned a second and third phase. Phase 2 added two additional chambers, increasing storage capacity by 1,680 tons, while phase 3 introduced a second story that houses a potato chip processing line.
By adding storage capacity and processing capabilities, Silas Export Senegal is now able to control the entire supply chain while reducing reliance on imports during Senegal’s off-season. This approach not only strengthens local market access but also reinforces it’s position in the global fresh produce trade.
Before this facility was built, Senegal’s onion and potato market relied heavily on imported produce during off-seasons. The Agro Expedition Senegal storage center offers a buffer for fresh produce, enabling the client to maintain a steady supply to the market even when local production ceases.
The Large-Scale Storage Solution for Agro Expedition Senegal is designed to meet their needs while ensuring operational efficiency. With a total capacity of 2,780 tons, the storage facility is divided into four chambers, each equipped with advanced cooling and ventilation systems. This system ensures consistent temperature and humidity control, protecting the quality of the potatoes and onions stored within.
The structure is built using modular prefabrication methods, with components manufactured and prepared off-site. By shipping pre-assembled parts, Hanse AgroStore reduced the on-site construction time, allowing for faster assembly and a more efficient project timeline.
From concept to completion, the construction process was carried out in three phases, with each phase benefiting from the lessons learned during the previous one. The design was fine-tuned in collaboration with Silas Export Senegal to meet the company’s needs for storage, processing, and office space.
The facility was built by a dedicated team of local Senegalese laborers working under the guidance of Hanse AgroStore’s engineers. The involvement of local labor created valuable opportunities for skills development and contributed to the project’s smooth execution. With each subsequent phase, the process became faster and more efficient, with the final construction phase taking only a few weeks to complete.
“When we first engaged with the client, they asked if we could handle a large-scale facility like this,” Chris Ramos recalls. “With our extensive experience in large-capacity storage in the Netherlands, we knew we were more than capable. By the time we completed the third phase, the facility had become a reference point in Senegal’s agricultural sector. It’s one of the few storage solutions in the country that is operational and fully functional, and it has caught the attention of both the Senegalese government and private investors. We look forward to working in Senegal again.”
With demonstrated results in reducing waste, stabilizing supply, and creating a streamlined production system, the project is a prime example of how sustainable infrastructure can shape the future of food supply chains. The success of this initiative has sparked interest in additional storage facilities across Senegal, as it serves as a leading example of climate-controlled agricultural storage.
