Revolutionizing potato storage for Elgeyo Marakwet County farmers

Farmers in Elgeyo Marakwet County, Kenya, are embracing the benefits of innovative storage solutions with a new zero-energy cold store. Commissioned by the Farmers Marketing Cooperative Society, this project addresses a key challenge for potato farmers: the inability to capitalize on market timing. By storing their harvest for a few months, cooperative members can now sell their potatoes at premium prices when market demand peaks. Inspired by the success of the storage solution in Uasin Gishu County, the cooperative identified Hanse AgroStore as the ideal partner for delivering a proven, small-scale solution tailored to their needs.

Enhancing food security

This project serves as a powerful example of how sustainable agricultural solutions can transform rural communities. By reducing post-harvest losses, the cold storage facility stabilizes food supplies, improves financial outcomes for farmers, and supports the broader goal of enhancing food security in Kenya.

Zero-energy design for rural areas

The storage barn’s zero-energy design combines natural ventilation with advanced insulated sandwich panels, maintaining cool internal temperatures without reliance on electricity. This innovative approach ensures crops like potatoes, and potentially others, are preserved for months even in areas with limited access to power. The flexibility to store various crops adds to the facility’s long-term value for the farming community.

Seamless construction with local collaboration

The 50-ton capacity cold store was built in under a week, thanks to efficient coordination between Hanse AgroStore’s engineers and local laborers. This hands-on collaboration not only accelerated the construction process but also created valuable job opportunities and strengthened community engagement. Such involvement ensures the facility’s long-term success by fostering local ownership and expertise.

Chris Ramos: “We are particularly proud of the Kapchebelel project. Working with the Farmers Marketing Cooperative Society and the Elgeyo Marakwet County Government was a pleasure. Their commitment to enhancing the supply chain allowed us to deliver a storage solution that we believe will have a lasting impact.”

Driving future innovation in agricultural storage

This project is an example for the growing demand for climate-smart agricultural infrastructure in Kenya. Its success builds on previous achievements and highlights the potential for scaling similar initiatives across the region. By addressing key challenges like post-harvest losses and market accessibility, projects like this are paving the way for a brighter future in agriculture.
